 Why 1000 words?

Language instructors have found that when language learners reach the level of having a 1000 word vocabulary, they are able to have simple conversations in the language. Linguists have also observed that the average daily vocabulary of a speaker, no matter which language they speak, consists of about 1000 words. Therefore 1000 words seem to be the logically sized vocabulary for a constructed international language.

During the heydays of Glosa, when there was a Glosa Education Organization (GEO) and several books and newsletters were published, I got to know Wendy Ashby personally. In spite of the fact that she had cancer for the last few years of her life, she worked hard to clarify some of the vocabulary problems with Glosa: multiple words having the same meaning, words with unclear meanings.

She focused on the basic vocabulary. She referred to it as "Basic Glosa." Before that she and Ron Clark had called it "Glosa 1000." Glosa 1000 always had more than 1000 words in it because of the same problems mentioned above. Basic Glosa had about 1300 words, and Ashby was not able to complete the work before her death in 2015.

How to solve the vocabulary problems? I certainly do not want contradict any of Wendy's hard work. Wendy Ashby and her pleasantness was the greatest asset Glosa ever had. But no one can ask her for any explanations now that she is gone.

And so I have turned to Lancelot Hogben's book Interglossa to answer some questions. Hogben's weak point was that although he tried to use the Latin/Greek international word roots of science for his vocabulary, he often used the more rarely-used ones taken from biological taxonomy; his definitions of the words, however, although broad in meaning were much better defined.

Therefore I took Wendy's vocabulary, especially the most recent words where there were multiple words with the same meaning, and combined them with Hogben's definitions. Where Ashby and Hogben had the same word, I used that one. I also separated compound words (for example, internatio into inter-natio). I also reinserted a few of the words Hogben considered of important basic meaning into the vocabulary. The result was just over 1000 words.

Glosa 1000 Words with Explanations

(Last update 2026-01-23) If you cannot find a word in this list, you really do not need another word. For instance, there is no word for "desk" in this list. Oh, no! Is the language deficient? Is there some kind of limbo here? Instead of inventing or adding a new word, just say what the word means. What is a desk? A piece of furniture you write on. Therefore grafo-mo, "write-furniture," is the word for "desk."  Sometimes an entire phrase may be necessary to state what you mean. "Department store" can be expressed as u mega boteka ko poli difere ra . That is just the way it goes with a language with a small vocabulary!
