Verboids

Introduction VERBOIDS are the true verbs in Glosa. While it is possible to use any Glosa word as a verb, verboids should be considered the PREFERRED verbs. (Of course, any verboid can be used as a noun as well.) Since verboids are limited in number, this helps to keep Glosa simple and easy to understand. Glosa does not have endings to identify verbs, so limiting the verbs makes it easy to spot them.  On reading the book INTERGLOSSA, I have the impression that the author, Prof.Hogben, was inspired to create verboids from the English word GET. GET is a small word that means so many things and is easy to use, yet it cannot mean simply anything; there is a limit to its meaning - that is, the word has a very broad meaning, and can be used in place of several other words, such as "receive," "gain," and "become." These verbs are designed to be easy to use and to help keep you from always going back to the dictionary to look up words when you really do not need a...

Glosa 1000 Words with Explanations

(Last update 2026-01-23) If you cannot find a word in this list, you really do not need another word. For instance, there is no word for "desk" in this list. Oh, no! Is the language deficient? Is there some kind of limbo here? Instead of inventing or adding a new word, just say what the word means. What is a desk? A piece of furniture you write on. Therefore grafo-mo, "write-furniture," is the word for "desk."  Sometimes an entire phrase may be necessary to state what you mean. "Department store" can be expressed as u mega boteka ko poli difere ra . That is just the way it goes with a language with a small vocabulary! After you say it like this once, you can usually say u boteka , and people will know what you mean. You need to get out of the habit of thinking that one meaning (MY meaning, which is better than anyone else's meaning) should have one word. In all languages the meaning of words varies. The first step in learning Glosa 1000 is ge...
